Alexander Grunewald enables Janssen Healthcare Innovation’s (JHI) growth by identifying, valuing, and championing new business opportunities. Alexander builds strong external relationships with the healthcare innovation and investment communities in areas of interest to JHI. He also partners internally with the JHI leadership team, Johnson & Johnson Innovation deal scouts, JJDC venture capitalists, cross-sector leadership and functional partners to optimize business development efforts. Alexander shapes the overall investment strategy and the business case for high potential opportunities, and progresses these opportunities into partnerships or investments to drive and support JHI priorities, commercial trials or other value-added solutions.
Alexander brings to the team a breadth of experience in healthcare, IT, pharmaceuticals, and academia. Prior to joining JHI, Alexander was a leader at McKinsey & Company where he led strategy development for large healthcare players and sales and operations. He then joined DestinationRx, Inc., a healthcare IT company, where he was responsible for the Drug Compare business, which empowers patients to manage their medications. Alexander also served as Senior Director of Corporate Strategy and Business Development at McKesson, the oldest and largest healthcare services company in the nation. In this role, he developed strategy for the company’s U.S. pharma business and participated in several acquisition efforts of specialty products based on market research and portfolio analysis. Alexander began his career in academia, serving as a senior postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology and then as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Alexander has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Boston University and a B.Sc. in Mathematics from King’s College in London, England.
