Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness characterized by a dysfunction of the thinking process, such as hallucinations and delusions, and withdrawal from the outside world. The illness appears to be cyclical, worsening in periods known as relapse and improving during remission. At times, people suffering from schizophrenia may appear emotionally healthy and stable. However, during the acute or psychotic phase, people with schizophrenia cannot think logically and may lose all sense of who they and others are. For a person with schizophrenia, everyday tasks like thinking clearly, controlling emotions, making decisions and relating to others are challenges.

Years of research have shown that schizophrenia is a biologically-based brain disorder, and not related to poor parenting or weak willpower. Contrary to popular belief, schizophrenia is not a "split personality" disorder.

Bipolar Mania
Bipolar mania is a serious mental illness involving changes in mood and energy. A person suffering from bipolar mania experiences wide mood swings with periods of relatively normal moods in between. Manic episodes are characterized by heightened energy, racing thoughts, distractibility, irritability, and inflated self-confidence.

While a cause is unknown, current research is focused on understanding the genetic basis of chemical imbalances in the brain that may contribute to the illness.

Autism
Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by impairments in communication and social interaction, and repetitive movements or behaviors. Associated symptoms can include severe irritability, aggression, temper tantrums, self-injurious behavior and rapidly changing moods. It begins in childhood and is thought to be a lifelong disorder.

The cause of autism is unknown, but scientists think that both genetic and environmental factors might play a role.

Parents usually are the first to identify unusual behavior in their child during infancy, such as unresponsiveness to sound or not making eye contact. In other cases, parents may notice their child has regressed or stopped meeting developmental milestones.

A pediatrician may refer a family to a specialist such as a child psychiatrist, psychologist, neurologist or developmental pediatrician for a formal diagnosis.
